Dick and Mary Cabela shared a deep love of the outdoors. Their even deeper faith gave their outdoor adventures extra meaning.
After meeting at St. Patrick’s Parochial Academy in Sidney, Nebraska, the couple married in 1955 and later became parents to nine children. In 1961, they founded Cabela’s, which has become one of the largest outdoor outfitting companies in the world. They started the company by selling hand-tied fishing flies from their kitchen table. Though their personal time was limited, they always made time to pursue their passions of hunting and conservation.
They created the Cabela Family Foundation to ensure these blessings will be enjoyed for many generations. The Foundation’s mission is to build and create partnerships and projects which promote outdoor recreation, conservation and charity toward others.

Promote Outdoor Recreation
The Cabela Family Foundation seeks to help others, particularly youth, appreciate the blessing of the outdoors, just as Dick and Mary Cabela did.
The Cabela Family Foundation embraces the North American Wildlife Conservation Model, a belief that our wildlife belongs to all and needs to be managed to sustain animal populations. This idea promotes the concept that each generation should be able to experience wildlife in the wild.
Charity Toward Others
Dick and Mary Cabela’s deeply rooted Catholic faith influenced their view of the world. A strong belief in caring for God’s creation led the couple to believe they were called to be stewards of the earth and its creatures.
