Hands-on Rhino Conservation in Namibia
Every once in a while, a conservation opportunity comes your way that compels you to act. Sometimes it's the story, and others it's the pure and simple fact of how much difference you can make. This trip to Namibia was a prime example where it contained both.
With the ongoing and ever-present poaching threat, and rising costs of anti-poaching, a difficult decision was made...de-horn and relocate an entire population of white rhinos. These practices are a complex topic today, but often times, completely necessary to ensure the animals chance at survival. Also, relocating them to a much smaller concession allows for more-effective anti-poaching patrols.
This was a big project to take on, and it takes a village, plus cooperation from many areas to pull it off successfully. From planning and logistics to veterinarians and transport, it's amazing to see what you can accomplish when everyone has a common goal. It's also worth noting that a friends at the Weatherby Foundation contributed funding toward this effort, and we thank them for it.
